Before you begin your preparation, you must ensure that you meet the strict eligibility parameters set by the commission regarding education and age.

1. Educational Qualification

  • For LDC / JSA / DEO: Candidates must have passed the 12th Standard (HSC) or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.
  • For DEO Grade ‘A’ (in CAG & Consumer Affairs): Candidates must have passed the 12th Standard in the Science stream with Mathematics as a mandatory subject from a recognized Board.

2. Age Limit & Relaxations

The standard age limit to apply for SSC CHSL is 18 to 27 years. The crucial date for calculating the age limit will be mentioned in the official notification (usually 1st August of the recruitment year).

Standard Age Relaxations:

  • OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 Years
  • SC / ST Candidates: 5 Years
  • PwBD Candidates: 10 Years (13 Years for OBC, 15 Years for SC/ST)
  • Ex-Servicemen: 3 Years after deduction of military service rendered.

The SSC CHSL offers a highly lucrative salary structure along with excellent central government perks such as DA, HRA, and Transport Allowances.

  • Lower Division Clerk (LDC) / Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA): Pay Level-2 (Rs. 19,900 to Rs. 63,200).
  • Data Entry Operator (DEO): Pay Level-4 (Rs. 25,500 to Rs. 81,100) and Pay Level-5 (Rs. 29,200 to Rs. 92,300).
  • Data Entry Operator, Grade ‘A’: Pay Level-4 (Rs. 25,500 to Rs. 81,100).

The SSC completely revamped the CHSL exam pattern recently. The selection is now divided into two primary tiers. Tier-1 is strictly qualifying in nature, while the final merit list is prepared based entirely on the marks scored in Tier-2.

Tier-1 (Computer Based Examination)

This is a 60-minute objective test consisting of 100 questions. There is a negative marking of 0.50 marks for every wrong answer.

Subject Questions Marks
English Language (Basic Knowledge) 25 50
General Intelligence (Reasoning) 25 50
Quantitative Aptitude (Basic Arithmetic) 25 50
General Awareness 25 50
Total 100 200

Tier-2 (Objective + Typing Test)

Tier-2 is conducted in two sessions on the same day. It includes Mathematical Abilities, Reasoning, English Language, General Awareness, and a Computer Knowledge Module. Immediately following this, candidates must pass a mandatory Skill Test / Typing Test.

The biggest challenge in SSC CHSL is not the difficulty of the questions, but the strict time limit. Solving 100 questions in 60 minutes requires lightning-fast calculation speed and high accuracy. Waiting for the notification to begin your preparation is a massive mistake.

Start evaluating your current standing by attempting full-length mock tests based on the latest TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) exam pattern.

The Staff Selection Commission has launched a brand new website (ssc.gov.in). Candidates must create a new One-Time Registration (OTR) profile on this new portal. Old OTR details from the previous ‘ssc.nic.in’ website are no longer valid.

  1. Visit the official new SSC portal: ssc.gov.in.
  2. Click on “Login / Register” and select “Register Now”.
  3. Complete your One-Time Registration (OTR) by verifying your Aadhaar, Email, and Mobile Number.

Q1: Can 12th appearing (final year) students apply for SSC CHSL 2026?
Answer: Yes, students who are currently in their 12th standard can apply. However, they must acquire their final passing certificate before the crucial cutoff date mentioned in the official notification.

Q2: Is the typing test mandatory for all posts?
Answer: Yes, the Skill Test / Typing Test in Tier-2 is completely mandatory for all posts (LDC, JSA, DEO). However, it is qualifying in nature, meaning its marks are not added to the final merit list.
